My favorite photos of 2018

As I watched fireworks from the ambulance bay of my ED make their grand appearance against the midnight sky, one thought stubbornly persisted in my mind: yet another year has passed and has it been all I had hoped it would be? Whether you are the life-of-the- party or the I’m going-to-bed-early type, one cannot argue that there is something magical about the one night in the year where old meets new and fresh dreams are made. I cannot help but reflect every year on New Years Day of all the things that had…

Connecting with Locals and Making Portraits in Jordan

Whenever I think of travel, my mind always goes to the people I meet along the way. The kind stranger on the street in Beirut helping me with directions. The beautiful barista in a hip coffee shop in Chile chatting about local attractions. The children playing in their front yard in a village in Cuba, letting me take their photos. The people I meet during my travels are what makes the journey real special to me.  Jordan was no different. Similar to Lebanon, the country is home to a mixture of distinct peoples and backgrounds, a fact I found…

Wadi Rum – The Desert that Stole My Heart

I have been seeing images of Wadi Rum all over social media and given my love for deserts in general, I knew we had to include it on our itinerary. The landscape of this Valley of the Moon, as it is known in Arabic, exceeded my expectations on all levels. The ways of life there are dictated by the availability…

Jordan – Journey through Amman and Beyond I

Monika and I started to get a little freaked out. The road was getting narrower with each turn and there was not another vehicle in site. Our rental car kept climbing steadily through this winding mountain road, but we had no idea whether we were actually on the right track to our destination. Every turn we took we saw nothing but mountains and not the slightest peek of any civilization. Google Maps had worked wonderfully so far, but judging by our current surroundings, we might as well have been on the road to the middle of nowhere. For the first…

Tips and Ideas on Photographing Strangers in New Mexico

As I’m beginning to write this, my suitcase still lies unpacked in the hallway and the photos from the trip’s last day of shooting sit unloaded on a memory card in the slot of my camera. The few days immediately after any trip are slightly chaotic, as I try to fight off jet lag, catch up on chores left behind and start my regular work schedule, which can be quite taxing on the body after such a blissful break from the ED. But nonetheless, I always want to get back on my feet as soon as possible and…
